Whale Hunting...

Last weekend we went Whale Hunting .... but not in the harpooning kind of way! We kept hearing about all of these Blue Whale sighting off the coast so Corey and I decided we had enough hearing about it, we HAD to see them for ourselves! Normally at this time of year the whales have passed us by but there is an abundance of krill (their favorite snack) off of our coast so the whales have been hanging out and enjoying their feast. We live in the South Bay which is a pretty amazing place to live, we have gorgeous weather, the beach is 10 minutes away and anything you could want or need is at your fingertips. We've lived here our whole lives so we unfortunately take it for granted ... hearing about these amazing Blue Whales right in our backyard, we knew we couldn't let them pass through "our" beaches without catching a glimpse.
Saturday was way too hot to stay home so we loaded the kids up in the Mystery Machine (see pic below) and we hung out at Point Fermin Park listening to Corey's favorite reggae band Christafari and waiting for late afternoon so we can start our hunt. Once we saw the whale watching boat pass by, we knew it was time to start looking. We drove over to a resort on the cliffs of PV called Terranea where there are look out points over the ocean, there were several other people on the look out so we knew it was a good spot to see these ginormous Blue Whales and WE DID!! It was amazing!! They weren't super close to shore but we could still see them swimming back and forth. Karina LOVED scanning the ocean and then seeing them pop up, go back under and then the fountain come out of their blowholes. We even saw their huge tails come out of the water a few times. It was such an exciting thing to see in person, especially with a little girl that is so facinated with wildlife. We have been making it a point to really take advantage of these kind of moments together, we're pretty sure she'll never forget the time she saw Whales playing in the water!

Our weekend cruiser aka The Mystery Machine

Karina LOVES going anywhere in the van

Our view from the cliffs ... the Whales were too far off to get a good pic

I see one, I see one!!
